SAFARI ITINERARY

DAY 1: Samburu National Park

Safari starts at 0700hrs

Meet and greet in Nairobi

This morning a member of Quest Holidays will meet you at Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport) or at your Nairobi hotel. After a short briefing on the events ahead, greet our expert safari guide.

Depart for Samburu or Shaba Game Reserve. Samburu National Reserve. Arrive for lunch at your safari lodge or tented camp set on the banks of Ewaso Nyiro River. You will have some time to rest and relax before proceeding for an afternoon game drive until dusk.

Covering just 165 sq km of mainly arid plains, Samburu National Reserve is watered by the Ewaso Ngiro river, whose banks are lined by palm groves and dense riverine forest, and attracts a wide range of wildlife. Especially visible during the dry season – but good throughout the year – are zebra, giraffe, buffalo, waterbuck, elephant, lion, cheetah and leopard.

DAY 2: Samburu National Reserve

Spend the day with an early morning and afternoon game drives in Samburu National Reserve to seek out the ‘Samburu Special Five’: the Reticulated Giraffe, the Grevy Zebra, the Beisa Oryx, the Somali Ostrich and the Gerenuk, all rare species that occur only in this part of the country. Look out for the reserve’s well known larger wildlife including elephants, lion and leopard.

DAY 3: Ol Pejeta Conservancy

Your journey now takes you to Ol Pejeta Conservancy situated between the foothills of Mount Kenya and the Aberdares. On arrival, embark on a game viewing drive as you are transferred to your safari lodge or tented camp for lunch. Relax at leisure enjoying the hotel facilities before venturing to the park for a game viewing drive until sunset.

DAY 4: Ol Pejeta Conservancy

Find yourself and the Big Five as you explore 90,000 acres of pure wild with an experienced guide who will share his expert knowledge with you. You will encounter elephants, wild dog, lion, hyena, buffalo, cheetah, rhino, and all the plains herbivores. Ol Pejeta Conservancy has some of the highest predator densities in the region, and aside from the big cats, there is a chance of seeing wild dogs. Other endangered species here include the Beisa Oryx, Jackson’s hartebeest and Grevy’s zebra. The highlights include the largest black rhino sanctuary in East Africa; a population of southern white rhino; a refuge for the last two northern white rhino left in the world; and Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary, housing orphaned and abandoned chimpanzees.

DAY 5: Lake Nakuru National Park

Today we depart early for Lake Nakuru National Park. Lunch en route. Arrive and continue with game viewing drive before later being transferred to your safari lodge or tented camp.

Lake Nakuru National Park is one of the top tourist destinations in Africa, famed for the Flamingos, both lesser and greater, that flock to its shores. The lake is also a very important breeding ground and stop over for many species of birds, and has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Established as Kenya’s first rhino sanctuary, Lake Nakuru National Park now hosts one of the largest black rhino concentrations in the country while substantial numbers of white rhino have also been introduced. Other indigenous mammals seen in the park include spotted hyena, lion (restocked), leopard, the hippopotamus (in the north-eastern corner), rock hyrax, bat-eared fox, wildcat, golden cat, Bohor reedbuck, Defassa waterbuck (in high grasses bordering the shore) and Colobus monkey, Rothschild’s giraffe, black and white rhinoceros

DAY 6: Masai Mara National Reserve

Your drive now takes you to the Masai Mara, Kenya’s most famous wildlife reserve.  Arrive and embark on a game viewing drive as you are transferred to your lodge or tented camp for lunch. You will have some time to relax before heading out for a game viewing drive until sunset.  

Masai Mara, also known as the “Jewel of Africa,” is inhabited by many of Africa’s most popular wild animals, including lions, leopards, cheetahs,  elephants, cape buffalo, and rhinoceros, as well as giraffes, hippos, hyenas, Nile crocodiles, wildebeest, zebra, gazelles, antelopes, and more.

DAY 7: Masai Mara National Reserve

Spend the day exploring Masai Mara. During the game drive, our knowledgeable safari guide will introduce you to life in the savanna and share their infinite knowledge about African wildlife. The wildlife viewing is superb throughout the year. Observe massive crocodiles basking in the sun, see the graceful hippos wallowing in muddy water and catch the antics of mischievous monkeys overhead. Watch, too, as the African savannah elephants roaming along the forest edge and spot cheetahs in the open savannah eyeing off their next meal. The yearly wildebeest migration (July to September) coming through the park is one of the world’s most amazing wildlife spectacles.

DAY 8: Masai Mara to Nairobi – Departure

After breakfast, check out from your safari lodge and bid farewell to Masai Mara. Drive back to Nairobi. If time permits, visit a souvenir shop to view and buy different art designs by Kenya’s finest designers. Our safari guide will transfer you to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for your international flight back home.

Optional flight to Nairobi

To save on time spent on the road, take a flight back to Nairobi. After breakfast, your safari guide will drive you to the nearest Masai Mara airstrip. Board the domestic flight (Safarilink or Air Kenya) departing at 11:00 am to Nairobi with stops at several airstrips. On arrival at Wilson Airport at 12:20 pm, a member of Quest Holidays will meet you and assist with the transfer to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
